Bollywood's Lal Singh Chadha was one of the most awaited films of 2022, but that anticipation did not translate into the box office of leading man Aamir Khan. After facing legal challenges, Indian media are now reporting that Khan has managed to recoup the film's huge losses and waive royalties.

On Tuesday, a source told Bollywood Hungama that the producers of Viacom 18 lost INR 1 billion on the film as it failed to earn INR 600 million at the domestic box office, but if Khan decides to waive his fee. If so, the losses of studios will be reduced. The report also stated that the PK actor has been working on the film for four years and if he doesn't collect his fee, he won't earn.

An earlier report in the publication suggested that differences between the studio and Khan's production company arose after Tom Hanks was dropped in the Hindi remake of Forrest Gump. The film's promotional activities were reportedly not approved by the studio, leading to its downfall.

The film also stars Kareena Kapoor, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh among others. It is written by Atul Kulkarni and directed by Advaita Chandan. Lal Singh Chadha was released in the same week as Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan and both films faced challenges at the domestic box office. In its first week, Khan's film earned INR 480 million, less than his flop Thugs of Hindostan. Not far behind was Kumar's film, which matched Lal Singh Chadha's films and failed to impress the Indian audience.

Khan had earlier said that he would release the film on OTT platforms six months after its release, but the film's fortunes at the box office made the team reconsider their decision. According to Indian media, Lal Singh Chadha will now launch on OTT platforms in eight weeks. However, the film did well at the international box office, surpassing Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiwadi and Anupam Kher's Kashmir Ensembles to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 at the international box office.
